New IFCN Neuromuscular Ultrasound Training Program

IFCN Executive Committee Approves New Neuromuscular Ultrasound Training Program

The IFCN Society of Neuromuscular Imaging (ISNMI), the neuromuscular ultrasound (NMUS) Special Interest Group of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, is pleased to announce that its proposed ‘IFCN Neuromuscular Ultrasound Training Program’ has been formally approved by the IFCN Executive Committee at the end of 2025. This new program provides an IFCN-endorsed educational framework for physicians who wish to integrate neuromuscular ultrasound into clinical neurophysiological practice worldwide.

Neuromuscular ultrasound has rapidly become an essential extension of the clinical examination and electrodiagnostic testing, offering high-resolution structural information on nerves and muscles that complements NCS and EMG. At the same time, many regions still lack clear, structured training pathways. The new IFCN curriculum addresses this gap by outlining a standardized, evidence-based approach to learning NMUS from a neurophysiology perspective, emphasizing quantitative assessment, reproducible scanning protocols, and integration of ultrasound findings with clinical and electrodiagnostic data.

The program is built as a two-step program which will include basic and intermediate/advanced training levels, aligned with published consensus guidelines for NMUS training (Tawfik et al., Muscle & Nerve 2019). It combines theoretical self-study, online lectures and webinars, interactive case-based discussions, and extensive supervised hands-on training, with at least half of the overall curriculum devoted to practical scanning. Hands-on courses are envisioned to be hosted during IFCN congresses and chapter meetings, as well as at stand-alone IFCN- and SIG-organized events, to facilitate global access.

A key feature of this initiative is its explicitly clinical neurophysiology–driven focus. The curriculum is designed to teach practitioners how to perform and interpret nerve and muscle ultrasound in a standardized way, quantify their findings, and use them in a clinical context alongside NCS/EMG and other diagnostic tools. This neurophysiology-centered approach distinguishes the IFCN program from existing training pathways in other specialties, such as radiology or rheumatology, and is intended to support the implementation of NMUS in EMG and neuromuscular clinics around the world.

Importantly, the IFCN Neuromuscular Ultrasound Training Program is an educational framework and does not constitute a certification of competence or a legal license to practice NMUS. Completion of the curriculum or any of its components will result in a certificate of attendance/completion of training only, and does not supersede local training requirements, regulatory standards, or credentialing processes. Demonstration of competence remains dependent on continued supervised practice and adherence to local regulations in each practitioner’s own setting.

By providing a clear, internationally endorsed pathway for NMUS education, the IFCN and its Society of Neuromuscular Imaging aim to promote high-quality, harmonized practice in neuromuscular ultrasound and to give colleagues—especially those in regions with limited training infrastructure—a reliable way to demonstrate their interest and engagement in this growing field. Further details on how to enroll in the program and when will Step 1 start will be shared through IFCN communication channels in due time.

Nens van Alfen MD, PhD
President of the ISNMI

We actively participated in the congress and helped to create a communicative atmosphere of exchange and networking for young colleagues.
Among our activities at the congress we would like highlight the following.

1. Individual YNN Booth
The prominent YNN booth served as a "hub" for young colleagues during the Congress. The booth tremendously increased YNN's visibility helped promote our activities throughout congress by providing a central space for exchange. Thanks in part to this, we were able to recruit several new members and Mentee applications for the newly established EMEAC Mentorship programme.

2. Coffee with an expert event
In this newly introduced format, experienced professionals met young colleagues for informal discussions, answering questions and offering advice. In total, we held a total of eight events with more than ten speakers, including IFCN Executive Committee members during breaks at the YNN booth. The topics covered the basics about the purpuse and structure of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, the standards of journal editing to ensure the highest qualified manuscripts, the IFCN Mentorship programme, and details of neurophysiology training in the USA. A sign up sheet will be distributed right before the Congress.

If you are interested in joining YNN contact : info@ifcn.info

Please follow us on social media:

https://bsky.app/profile/ifcn-ynn.bsky.social
